I swear every year I look at the abbreviation used to represent those who live alternative lifestyles there are a few more letters added. I just started getting accustomed to the extra Qs only to find that not only are there are a few more letters they’ve even added a number! Members, families and supporters of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer, Questioning, 2-Spirited and Allies (or LGBTTIQQ2SA for short! Seriouslly?!!) came all out to celebrate at the annual Pride Parade. The Parade held on July 1st weekend was the culmination of the Pride Festival which was launched on June 24th.
Despite facing funding cuts and a snub by Toronto’s newly elected Mayor the Pride parade did not disappoint. From outrageous Phalic neck warmers to human bodies fully exposed the Pride Parade turned out to be an absolutely fun, over the top display of true expression and freedom!
The traveling black chicks were there; for some of us this was our first actual visit to the parade, for others this was a return visit. We had a blast, the weather was scorchingly hot and the energy was fun and relaxed. We chatted with members and supporters of the LGBTTIQQ2SA community to find out what Pride means to them.
We couldn’t have said it better than our friend from Chicago. It is about Acceptance not tolerance we are all given the right to celebrate our humanity regardless of how we choose to live it!
