While editing our interview with Dr. Keleta-Mae I was truly able to delve into her work as an artist and came upon her remarkable album ‘bloom’. All of the music and spoken word featured on our interview with her are from her albums (she has recorded 3 albums). Over the coming few weeks we are going to feature some of our favorite tracks from her albums.

The first song “soul crying” was so hauntingly captivating, not just her voice but I truly related to the lyrics in this track. So many times we find ourselves questioning our place on this journey through life. Naila captures this uncertainty beautifully… hit play and have a listen below.

Album Liner Notes (online)

“I was sitting on the asphalt at an airport in Costa Rica when I composed the lyrics and melody of the song “Soul Crying.” I think that’s when I knew I was working on a new album, that I later decided to call bloom. Over the course of the following seven years I wrote 11 grants trying to get enough money together to make the album that I envisioned. I received nine rejection letters–the lyrics and music were too commercial for arts councils and too independent for music industry funders–I was devastated each time. Making bloom reaffirmed the importance of determination, vision and persistence in my work and my life.”

Release Date: 01 June 2009
